Review: The New Zealand Expeditionary Force in World War I (Stack & Chappell)

The New Zealand Expeditionary Force in World War I.

No. 473 of the Osprey “Men-at-Arms” series: In fewer than 50 pages, this concise guide introduces the reader to the essential facts about the NZEF: its Commanders, Organization, Campaigns, Uniforms & Insignia, Weapons & Equipment.

Profusely illustrated with period photos and color paintings, the book features comprehensive captions and a separate section of informative commentary on the plates. Its brief bibliography and single-page index are adequate for its scope.

The book provides a writer with just enough information for a brief description in a novel; there is sufficient detail for a modeling hobbyist to paint figurines to people a diorama; and it would pass a pleasant afternoon’s perusal by an armchair general. Appropriate for middle-school homeschoolers.
